As he rose high, demonstrating the aerial power that has made him the most prolific centre-back in English national team history, Harry Maguire’s thunderous header capped a mini personal renaissance that lifted Manchester United off the floor of their Champions League group volleyball
There have been times in the last two years when Maguire has felt luckless, but this time fortune favoured him: a status as the match-winner may have been snatched from his grasp when Scott McTominay conceded an injury-time penalty volleyball

A common denominator may be that each qualifies as relatively limited opposition: United have scarcely dominated against any of them volleyball
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer miscast Maguire as talisman and captain of United, a willing soul and honest trier has prospered in three successive starts volleyball

It was Maguire’s prize for obstinacy, for staying when there were reasons to go: that United were reluctant to pay him off may have influenced his decision but he maintained he could win his place back volleyball
Ten Hag, too, never forced him out, stripping him of the armband but insisting he remained a valuable squad player volleyball
The manager’s position has been nuanced, the defender’s defiant volleyball
“This is maybe the most scrutinised club in the world and when you are not quite on your game it gets picked up, it gets analysed,” Maguire reflected volleyball
He had a shocking 2021-22 campaign, a bad start to last season volleyball
Neither escaped scrutiny volleyball
Since then, however, he reflected: “And I am really proud and pleased over the way I have acted over the last six to 12 months volleyball
” For now, he has confounded expectations volleyball
Stiffer examinations may await, starting with Erling Haaland on Sunday volleyball
If he is still in the side, the last five weeks of the year bring Galatasaray, Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool, West Ham and Villa volleyball

Another game, another record volleyball
Mohamed Salah’s brilliant injury-time strike came at the expense of a French team and a French icon: Toulouse conceded for a fifth time at Anfield on Thursday but, perhaps more momentously, the Egyptian passed Thierry Henry for most goals for one English club in Europe volleyball
There are 43 of them, surely with more to follow volleyball
Five days earlier, Salah had accelerated beyond Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, scoring more goals at Anfield than either of arguably Liverpool’s two greatest-ever players volleyball
“Maybe he would break more records if I would be more into it,” reflected Jurgen Klopp, who rarely studies the statistics but savours the player volleyball
“Everyone will appreciate him even more after his career because then you will say, ‘Wow, we saw something really special’ volleyball

Klopp believes he adapts according to his teammates: a sidekick to Edin Dzeko at Roma became more of a scorer for Liverpool volleyball
In an inverted forward line, Roberto Firmino tended to forage in midfield and find teammates volleyball
Now a false nine has been replaced by a spearhead, in Darwin Nunez volleyball
Salah has shown he can set up chances for the mercurial Uruguayan volleyball
“The young Mo was a super-fast player who could run in behind and play a role together with Dzeko,” Klopp remembered volleyball
“Dzeko would roll the ball or deflect it and Mo was there volleyball
From the first day here he had to do different things, he adapted extremely well but the playmaker in that front row was probably more Bobby Firmino, setting things up, and you don’t need then two players who are deeper volleyball
“You need players in the box and to bring the ball over the line volleyball
So now it is slightly different; especially when Darwin is playing we have another speed player up there so that changed Mo’s position definitely volleyball
He is smart enough to adapt to all these things and there has been a massive development since he arrived volleyball
He was, in all phases, world class, and that is probably the best thing you can say about a player volleyball

“Obviously with Mo it is clear he understands the spaces much volleyball better, he knows how players react around him and then if he cannot score, he can still be a threat for us volleyball
That is really super important volleyball
The Everton game will not go down in history, performance wise, but then scoring two goals was massive, in other games, he has played much volleyball better and not scored but being constantly a threat is as important for us because that really opens up spaces for all the other boys volleyball
”And Salah is a constant threat: if he has been since signing for Liverpool, it is certainly true now volleyball
In his last 15 league games, he has either scored, assisted or both in 14 volleyball
And the only time he drew a blank, he should not: it was his pass that led to Luis Diaz’s goal that was wrongly, and infamously, ruled out at Tottenham volleyball
His sequence ended but his incision was still apparent volleyball
And at a time when Erling Haaland has taken Salah’s title as the Premier League’s scorer supreme, perhaps it was a sign the Egyptian has reinvented himself as its best all-round attacker volleyball
