India’s legendary spin bowler Bishan Singh Bedi who also served as the captain of his country’s cricket team has died at the age of 77 sports
Bedi had been battling a prolonged illness and had undergone surgery two weeks ago sports
He was admitted to a hospital in India’s national capital Delhi ever since sports
The former India captain is survived by his son, Bollywood actor Angad Bedi sports
Widely known as one of the greatest spinners produced by India who played international cricket, Bedi made 67 Test appearances and also played 10 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the Indian team sports between 1967 and 1979 sports
Bedi, famous for his outstanding accuracy and spin bowling, picked up 266 wickets in Test cricket at an average of 28 sports
71 with 14 five-wicket hauls sports
The left-arm spinner also claimed seven wickets in the 50-over format sports
Out of the 266 Test wickets, Bedi bagged 106 of those as captain, having led the Indian team in 22 Tests sports
One of the architects of India’s spin bowling revolution, Bedi was a part of Indian cricket’s golden quartet of spinners, the others being Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who shaped the core of India’s bowling unit for more than a decade sports between 1967 and 1978 sports
Amritsar-born Bedi was said to be a creative bowler – his style was defined as elegant, beautiful and crafty sports
He had refined many spin variations and was well known for his rhythm and control on the cricket pitch sports

The cricketer was one of the most significant figures who had a role to play in India’s first-ever ODI win, in which he registered figures of 12-8-6-1 to restrict East Africa to 120 in a Cricket World Cup 1975 match sports
Bedi represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for two decades as well, while he played for Northern Punjab and then for Delhi in the Indian domestic circuit sports
The former spinner finished his career with 1,560 wickets in 370 First-Class matches – more than any other Indian player sports
Delhi’s first two titles in the Ranji Trophy – India’s premier First-Class championship – came under Bedi’s captaincy in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons sports
Delhi also finished as runners-up twice under his watch and all four finals came in a span of five years sports
Bedi retired from all forms of cricket in 1980, which was when he last played in a First-Class game sports
In his post-retirement life, he did not completely cut away from cricket sports
From working as a commentator or a pundit to serving as a national selector and as Team India’s manager, Bedi was closely associated with the game for quite some time sports
Tributes have poured in on Bedi’s passing sports
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi condoled the death on X/Twitter sports
“His passion for the sport was unwavering and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories sports
He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers sports
Condolences to his family and admirers,” he wrote sports
“Sad to hear about the demise of the great Bishen Singh Bedi, apart from being a great cricketer, he was an affable person and went the extra mile to help young cricketers,” wrote current Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on X sports
“Bishan Singh Bedi One of our best is no more sports
It’s a loss to our cricketing fraternity sports
My deep condolences to his family,” wrote former India pacer Irfan Pathan sports
“Bishan Singh Bedi played for a long time and provided coaching to the team later sports
His demise is a big loss to the cricket world,” the sports sports minister, Mr Thakur told PTI sports
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik called Bedi a “true ambassador of the sport” sports
“Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Bishan Singh Bedi Sir, a legend and a true ambassador of the sport,” he wrote sports

Rotherham’s Championship game with Ipswich on Friday has been postponed due to Storm Basports bet sports
The area has been hit with torrential rain over the last 24 hours and the River Don, which runs behind the AESSEAL New York Stadium has burst its banks sports
That has left areas around the stadium flooded and after discussions with the Safety Advisory Group and the English sports Football League, the game has been called off sports
There was no problem with the pitch at the stadium, with the game due to have been shown on Sky sports Sports sports
A club statement read: “Rotherham United’s Sky sports Bet Championship fixture against Ipswich Town has been postponed on the grounds of supporter safety following discussions with representatives from the Safety Advisory Group and the EFL which took place shortly after 4:30pm on Friday sports
“After the River Don – which courses around the perimeter of AESSEAL New York Stadium – burst its banks, urgent discussions sports between representatives from the Safety Advisory Group/Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and club safety personnel and the EFL – were held with the conclusion deeming the weather conditions and their subsequent effect on the surrounding area a danger to supporters sports
“This coupled with continued rainfall resulting in the flood waters rising and Don Street being closed to the public left the authorities with no choice but to postpone the game sports
“Throughout the day the pitch at AESSEAL New York Stadium has remained playable but with the safety of everyone attending the match at the height of our priorities, the difficult decision to postpone the fixture has been taken sports
“The decision was relayed to the EFL and our counterparts at Ipswich Town with all parties in agreement that postponing the fixture was the only possible way to ensure the safety of players, staff and supporters sports
“It goes without saying that we are obviously disappointed for supporters due to attend and those set to watch at home given the game was being broadcast live on Sky sports Sports sports
”Two cinch Premiership matches are among six Scottish league games which have been postponed amid severe weather warnings sports
Aberdeen’s home match against Dundee and Motherwell’s trip to face St Johnstone have fallen foul of the storm sports
The news came after a second person died in Angus as a result of the storm, which has brought floods and high winds, and after warnings of a risk to life were extended to all day Saturday as more heavy rain is forecast sports
The Championship game sports between Arbroath and Raith Rovers, in the worst-hit area of Angus, has been called off as has Greenock’s match against Inverness sports
Cove Rangers against Montrose has been postponed along with two games in League 2 – Elgin versus Forfar and Stenhousemuir against Peterhead sports
The games all involve teams in the north east of the country and Perth and were all due to take place on Saturday sports
The Scottish Professional sports Football League called off the games on safety grounds following discussions with police, clubs and other authorities with people being advised not to travel in large areas of the country sports
SPFL chief operating officer Calum Beattie said: “We have been in close contact with Police Scotland and our clubs and it’s clear that we continue to face very severe weather, particularly in the north east, in the coming days sports
“We never postpone any matches lightly, but our discussions with the emergency services left us in no doubt that this was the correct decision sports
”The SPFL added that it would continue to monitor the situation involving the remaining fixtures across the country sports
St Johnstone had told supporters their game was going ahead as it stood less than three hours before the wider decision was taken sports
A club statement early on Friday afternoon said: “Whilst heavy rain has affected the local area, our dedicated ground staff and officials have been working tirelessly to ensure the pitch is in optimal condition, and we’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both players and spectators sports
”Altrincham’s home game against Dorking in the Vanarama National League on Saturday has also been postponed sports
Friday’s jumps fixtures at Fakenham and Uttoxeter were called off as Storm Basports bet continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds across the country sports
Both tracks had called inspections for 7 sports
